How to Cleanse Your Crystals

The first crystal I ever bought was a black tourmaline crystal. I had no idea what to do with it or if it would even work! As an empath, I’m very susceptible to other people’s moods and emotions and was having a tough time at my day job. I work in a small office and I felt like the negativity was bringing me down and making me miserable. I would come home from work and not want to do anything. Making dinner and spending time with my son was a struggle.

So I did some research and read about the benefits of putting a black tourmaline crystal on my desk at work. According to my research, it would absorb the negative energy around me and help me stay even and afloat during the day. I went to the closest crystal store and bought one that same day. I wasn’t honestly expecting it to work but I figured hey, at least I’ll give it a shot.

Boy was I wrong! From the first moment I put that little rock on my desk I could tell the difference! I was in a better mood, more optimistic and rolling with the punches of working in a busy office… until about 2 weeks later. The whole week I was truly a cranky, anxious wreck; I’ll even be the first to admit that I was a HUGE bitch. But I couldn’t figure out why! I had my crystal and it was working so well, why was I suddenly feeling like this? Turns out, I should have done some more research on that tiny, magical rock before I started using it.

I didn’t know just how important it is to cleanse crystals after you purchase them (before you start using them) as well as the importance of cleansing them on a REGULAR basis. All crystals are made up of different materials and each one has a unique vibrational pattern which is why they are so great at helping us with such a multitude of things. There are stones that help sing with the vibrations of our chakras and help tune them, stones that help heal us emotionally and ones that help those who suffer from anxiety. There is a crystal for everything you can think of! They need to be cleansed and recharged to make sure they continue working on that vibration. This is particularly important for protection stones or any stone that absorbs energy.

So how is a crystal cleansed you ask? Do you just lather it up with soap and water and give it a good scrub? This thought actually brings me to an important note that I’d like to point out. As I mentioned above, every crystal is made out of a different material. Sure, some stones can be run under water and that will clean the outside of it but there are a lot of crystals that can’t tolerate water and will dissolve or be ruined by getting wet. And cleansing a stone on the outside will not change it’s vibration or the amount of negative energy that it’s holding inside. It needs a good internal scrubbing.

There are many different ways to do this so I’m going to list my favorites below. And remember, what works for one person may not work for another so be sure to choose the method that fits best for YOU. Each of these suggestions below work equally as well as another so it’s all about personal preference here.

Read below and decide what you like best!

THE 5 BEST WAYS TO CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS:

Smudge:

This is a fun and easy way to cleanse your crystals! I think the most popular smudging medium is sage but you can use whatever kind you like best.

Light your smudge (it’s okay if it’s loose or in a bundle) and set your intention. The most important part of this cleansing process is setting your intention. You could say something like, “With this sage, I am going to cleanse this crystal of all negative energy and vibrations so that it may better function to protect and heal me.” Go with the flow and use your intuition to guide you in what to say.

Now that you have set your intention, hold the crystal right above the smoke from your smudge so that it flows underneath and around it. You can keep saying your intention to yourself to keep your focus if it helps! Hold for about 30 seconds and voila, your crystal is cleansed!

Sun/Moonlight:

The sun and moon have amazing cleansing and recharging properties. For this one all you have to do is place your crystal outside in a spot that it will be in the light of both the sun and moon. Put it outside right before dark and pick it up around 11am or so. The goal is to make sure that it gets touched by the light of both. The moon will cleanse your crystal and the sun will recharge it! Just make sure that you don’t forget about it and leave it in the sun too long or it could weather and dull. It’s also a good idea to do this when the weather is nice and not raining or snowing. Another great option for this if you are worried about forgetting or losing your crystal is to place it in a window!

Selenite:

Selenite is a powerful crystal that has the ability to cleanse and protect humans as well as other crystals! It can be placed above the doors inside your home so anyone who walks through that door is cleansed as they go through. Selenite is sold in varying sizes and can be bought in a bar shape so you can place your stones on top of it to cleanse them.

Selenite is a delicate stone that can not tolerate water so make sure you don’t get it wet or it could dissolve. I personally believe that selenite is self-cleaning but if you feel that it needs an extra boost you can use any of the other methods in this list.

Reiki:

This method is my favorite way to cleanse my crystals and it’s not just because I am a reiki practitioner! I’ve used all of the methods in this list and this is the method I’ve had the most success with. If you are a practitioner all you have to do is set your intention, cup your hands around your stone (or if it’s a larger stone you can place your hands however is comfortable) and feel the energy flow! If you aren’t a practitioner, you can have a reiki practitioner do this for you! Seven Stones Studio offers cleansing services; click HERE to check them out!

Meditation:

Meditation is an effective way to cleanse crystals but this method is probably not for the beginner meditator.

As you might have guessed already, setting your intention is everything. This goes for cleansing via meditation as well. The key is to hold the crystal in your hands and focus all of your attention and awareness to it while you breathe deeply. Do this as long as you like! If you are a beginner and want to challenge yourself by trying this cleansing technique you could practice for as little as 5 minutes. Let your intuition guide you to do what feels right.

My best advice would be to try each of these techniques to see which you like best. If you use your stones regularly (or even if you don’t!) it’s a good idea to cleanse them often so that they are working at their highest potential.
