What is Reiki?

What is reiki? This is the biggest question that Michelle and I get as practitioners and it took us a while to figure the best way to respond! So while this might not be perfect, this is the best way for us to describe it and we will start at the beginning.

Dr. Mikao Usui is the founder and original master of Usui Reiki. He was always interested in and studied medicine, psychology, and theology. Through devotion, these interests led him to want to heal people through a less invasive method by healing through touch. After years of world traveling and studying other cultures, he became a Buddhist monk and lived in a monastery. He was trying to discover his own technique on how to heal. He took a trip to a local cave and decided to go through a 21 day rediscovery period. During this time, he fasted, prayed, and meditated to open his mind, body, and soul to what was out there. On the 21st day he had visions of ancient symbols that he would soon develop into Usui Reiki.

The idea was that a person would get “attuned” (certified) and receive energy. Once they have received the energy, they could start healing others. There are three levels of reiki and the final mastery stage. A Master teaches others and it creates the lineage of Reiki for practitioners to use to spread love, light and healing to others.

Reiki is known as a “universal energy.” This energy is full of healing properties. The practitioner channels the energy, typically through their hands, into the client/patient. This promotes relaxation and reduces stress. While the practitioner is sending the energy through your body, they are reciting mantras, saying blessings and prayers, and setting intentions for how to clear your energy. This increases the flow of universal energy to provide mental and emotional clarity and healing by removing toxicity from your body. Reiki is smart in the sense that it knows where to go. Each reiki practitioner practices differently and channels the energy a bit differently, but rest assured knowing that reiki is a healing touch and will always go where it is needed within your body.

Each patient or “receiver” experiences something different, and will not always experience the same thing twice! If you’re in tune with your body you may feel an array of things such as warmth, chills, you may feel as though you are floating, and so many other things. You may even see colors! If your vibrational energy is low or you aren’t sure how to tune into your energy, you may not feel much, but in the following hours, days, and weeks you will feel a flow of energy and release. No reiki treatment is like another. We believe that is part of the beauty in the energy and it’s healing ability.

Reiki is a safe healing modality that pairs well with western medical treatments to improve the healing process; reiki will not interfere with your current treatments and practices since it has no side effects. Your mind, body, and soul are connected and a positive mindset will always make a difference in your healing process.

While we are practitioners and we can aid your spiritual journey, it is important that you take responsibility for your spiritual healing as well. Throughout our education we have learned that there are a few rules to lead our lives and they are:

“Just for today, I will not anger. Just for today, I will not worry. Just for today, I will be grateful for all my blessings. Just for today, I will work with honesty and integrity. Just for today, I will be kind to all living beings.”

Some days this is hard to live by, but ultimately we try to lead by the teachings that Dr. Mikao Usui has set for us.

Wheww! I think that is the best description I could possibly give you on what reiki is and how it can begin to benefit you. Let us know if you have any questions, we would be happy to provide some clarity!
